Liposuction
Consultation/FAQ's

When is the optimal time for my
cosmetic surgery?
Being in the best shape, mentally, physically and skin wise, as
well as
being close to your optimal weight is always best. The bulging
and laxity
you see will not improve with exercise. The position of fat on
the body is
genetically determined. You may not be able to recontour areas
that
bulge with diet and exercise.
Will there be loose skin after my cosmetic surgery ?
The quality of skin before cosmetic surgery determines how the
skin tightens or
shrinks during the year after healing. The more stretched the
skin is before
the procedure the less it will tighten.
Will I have all the bulges smoothed out?
Every effort will be made to sculpt and contour your body. Not
every
area will have the same result. Once in a while a second
sculpting or
liposuction procedure will give added results. We would not
contemplate
this for 6 months to a year after the first cosmetic surgery, as
healing takes at least 1
year to be complete. There will be additional fees for the
second cosmetic surgery procedure.
Can I have only one area suctioned?
Usually, it is necessary to contour multiple areas to offer you
the best
results. The body is uneven on both sides and needs to be made
more
symmetrical where possible.
What are the common areas that require liposuction?
Usually, the problematic areas are the hips, inner and outer
thighs, inner
knees, abdomen, upper back below the bra, upper arms and under
the
chin. Men require the spare tire and occasionally the breast
areas.
Where is the cosmetic surgery performed?
Cosmetic surgery is either at a private surgical facility or at
Bridgeport Hospital.
What will I need before cosmetic surgery?
You may be asked to obtain a medical evaluation by your family
physician to ensure that you are in the best possible health.
Will I stay overnight?
No, you will go home the same day.
Will there be drainage?
Fluid is placed under the skin to aide in fat removal and to
afford you the
greatest comfort during and after cosmetic surgery. Some of this
pink or bloodtinged
fluid will leak out from the small cut for 2-3 days following
surgery.
Will I wear a garment?
You will be given two supportive garments to be worn for at
least 3 weeks.
You may shower the following day after surgery. When you resume
more
active exercise in 3-4 weeks, it is recommended that you wear an
elastic
sports garment for support.
Will smoking effect my healing?
Yes- The effect of each cigarette lasts 12 hours on the blood
vessels, and
the smoke is toxic. Consequently, smoking causes the skin to
heal poorly
and the complications associated with smoking are tremendous.
Even
second hand smoke during the weeks before and after cosmetic
surgery will
adversely affect your results. Stopping is a must before and
after any operation.
Type of Anesthesia:
You are gently put to sleep so that you will be comfortable
throughout the
operation. Once asleep, I will place a local anesthetic under
the skin so
that you will feel no discomfort and the amount of medicine you
receive
during the operation will be minimized. By putting you to sleep
your heart
rate, blood pressure, and amount of oxygen will be optimized.
Rest
assured that being asleep for hours is generally very safe, so
the 2.5-3.5
hours you sleep will be just fine.
How long will the cosmetic surgery take?
I take my time and like to be meticulous. That means not rushing
through
your cosmetic surgery to work on another patient. In addition,
there are many
things that must be done before the operation can even start,
including
washing and preparing the area, making sure that your body is
well
cushioned, and placing your legs in special boots to compress
them
during the surgery. Likewise, at the end of surgery I need to
wash you and
apply a special well padded dressing. I will also wait in
recovery after the
surgery to be certain that all is going well before I leave.
What can I expect?
Within a few weeks you will note an improvement in your shape.
Large
bulging areas will be smoother and better contoured. Clothing
that used
to bind you in these spots will fit much better. The improvement
will be
evident in weeks, but the final results from this cosmetic
surgery will take
at least one year.
When can I shower?
The day after cosmetic surgery.
Where are the scars?
The scars are scattered about the areas to be suctioned. Where
possible
they are placed in areas less visible. These scars take one year
to finish
healing. They are permanent but on the small side.
Will I hurt?
Generally, there is moderate discomfort for the first week that
is relieved
with pain medication that I will prescribe for you. The second
week after your
cosmetic surgery, the discomfort is minimal.
When I can resume activities?
It is best to relax for the first 10 days. Bruising is
variable and usually
located in the areas suctioned. However, do to gravity, the
swelling and
bruising may descend to lower positions. After 3 weeks you
should be
almost back to your old self except with a new and improved
body. It is
not a good idea to exercise or increase your heart rate for 3
weeks from
the time of your cosmetic surgery, and no vigorous lifting or
exercise for 6 weeks from
surgery. This will help to diminish your swelling and improve
the rate at
which you heal.
When can I drive again?
When you can move about without any discomfort and are not on
any
pain or muscle relaxant medications. This is usually, between 7
and 10 days.
What can I do to expedite my healing?
We will give you a set of guidelines that tells you what
medicines to stay
away from and which vitamins to take. Not allowing anyone to
smoke in
your presence for several weeks after your cosmetic surgery,
using ice often, resting, maintaining a low salt diet, and
having a positive attitude all go a long way to assisting
your recovery.
When will I see you again?
Depending upon the combination of surgeries, you will revisit
the office
within 7-8 days. There will be multiple visits (which are
included in your
care) to evaluate your progress and support your healing needs.
Are there any additional fees to what was quoted?
If your cosmetic surgery takes a bit longer (as there is never a
rush) you may owe a
bit more for the operating room and anesthesia. If future
surgery or
procedures are necessary there will be additional fees for
anesthesia, the
operating room, and the surgeon.
Conclusion:
My staff and I will strive to take the best care of you. We
appreciate your
trust and confidence in us and do not take it lightly. My aim is
to refresh,
smooth out, and brighten your appearance. A natural look is
always best,

Breast
Augmentation Consultation/FAQ's

What are some of the reasons woman have a breast augmentation?
The stories are varied but the common theme is to enhance body
image and
shape. Often, women are either born less endowed or they lose
breast
shape and volume after pregnancy or due to gravity. Anatomical
shaped
implants resemble the breast most closely in order to fill the
hollows and help
to support the skin and nipple. The size and shape improvement
gives a
physical and psychological boost
When is the optimal time for my cosmetic surgery?
Being in the best shape mentally and physically, including being
close to your
optimal weight is best. Surgery may be something you have been
contemplating for some time. Reading about the procedure and
having
realistic expectations will serve you well. It is best to wait a
few months after
breast feeding has stopped so that the shape of the breast is
closer to
normal.
Will my nipple position change?
If you start out with a very low nipple then it will not be
raised without
additional skin removal (mastopexy).
What will the shape look like?
The shape will continue to improve over six weeks with the
emergence of the
final appearance requiring 1 year. The upper portion of the
breast usually
swells to a greater degree and slowly takes on a better shape.
The larger the
implant, the more permanent this will be.
Do you place the implant above or under the chest muscle?
In most instances, the implant is placed below the muscle. The
lower 1/3 of
the implant is only covered by the breast tissue and skin. The
muscle helps to
pad the implant in case it becomes firm, and it aides in
separating the breast
from the implant during future mammography exams.
Where is the scar?
The scar is placed near the lower breast fold. It is usually
about 2 ½ inches
long, located at the bottom of the breast. This is better than
going through
the areola or axilla, as the implants can be placed more
precisely.
What type of implant is used?
Anatomical or tear drop shaped saline filled implants are used
in the majority
of procedures in order to give a natural appearance.
Is there a warranty for the implants in case they rupture or
deflate?
The implant company offers you a warranty for the implants. You
will be
registered with the company after your cosmetic surgery.
Will I be symmetrical after the cosmetic surgery?
Everyone is uneven. One breast is always higher, fuller, lower
or less full than the
other. After your cosmetic surgery the symmetry of the breasts
should be more even, but will never be the exactly the same. All
efforts will be made to match the breasts.
Can the implants become hard or distorted?
The implants are man-made and as such the body forms a wall of
scar tissue
around them in all instances. Sometimes this wall of scar is
overabundant and the
implants become firm or hard. One side may be firmer than the
other. If this
occurs then the implants can be removed or left alone. The
firmness is not a
danger to you. In the majority of cases, the scar tissue is
mild.
Where is the cosmetic surgery performed?
osmetic surgery is performed either at Health South Surgical
Center or at Bridgeport
Hospital.
What will I need before surgery?
You may be asked to obtain a mammogram and a medical evaluation
by your
family physician to ensure that you are in the best possible
shape.
Will I stay overnight?
You will go home the same day as the procedure.
Will I wear a garment?
You will be given two supportive garments to be worn for at
least 3 weeks. A
plastic dressing is placed over the stitches so that you may
shower the day after
cosmetic surgery. When you resume more active exercise in 3-4
weeks, it is recommended
that you wear an elastic sports garment for support.
Will smoking effect my healing?
Yes--each cigarette’s effect lasts 12 hours on the blood vessels
of the body.
Smoking causes the skin to heal poorly and the complications
associated with
smoking are tremendous. Even second hand smoke during the weeks
before and
after surgery will adversely affect your results. Stopping is a

as well as
a better fit in your clothing.

alleviate

surgery.

Reduction FAQ's

Where is the cosmetic surgery performed?
Bridgeport Hospital
Will I stay overnight?
After surgery you will stay overnight in the hospital for your
comfort and so
that the nurses can monitor you. The following morning I will
visit you and see
you off to your home.
What will I need before cosmetic surgery?
You may be asked to obtain a mammogram and possibly a medical
evaluation by your family physician.
Will I have drains?
There are usually two drains placed on the sides of the breasts
to remove fluid
that the body produces. These drains are removed after 2-5 days.
They are
easy to care for. I will give you instructions before leaving
the hospital.
Does it hurt to have the drains removed?
There is minimal, if any, discomfort. You may feel a little
pulling but no pain. I
remove them quickly.
Will smoking effect my healing?
Yes--each cigarette’s effect lasts 12 hours on the blood vessels
of the body.
Smoking causes the skin to heal poorly, and the complications
associated
with smoking are tremendous. Even second hand smoke during the

Where are the scars?
The scar will run along around the areola and then follow the
contour of
the breast to the fold beneath the breast. Imagine an anchor and
you will
be able to visualize the scar. Since the scars are on the lower
portion of
the breast you will be able to wear low cut garments and hardly
see them.
How long will I wear a bandage?
At the end of your cosmetic surgery I will wrap a soft, cottony
bandage around your
chest. This bandage is held in place with a bra. Wear the bra
for 3-4
weeks in order to keep the swelling down.
When can I shower?
Showering can usually take place the day after the drains are

Breast
Uplifting (Mastopexy)

With normal age, affects of
gravity, pregnancy and childbirth the breast shape and position
is altered. The fullness seen in the upper portion of the breast
is lost and replaced by indentations or hollowed areas. The
nipples and areola (pigmented portion) also change position and
are now usually pointing southward. Usually, the nipples were
not facing in the same direction prior to their downward drift.
This is important because after the mastopexy (uplifting), they
will be closer in position and shape but will never be
identical. No two breasts are ever perfectly the same either
before or after surgery.
The object is to move breast tissue from the bottom of the
breast upward while elevating the nipples and areolas. Loose
skin is tightened and the breast shape is fashioned to resemble
more of a tear drop.
If there is insufficient breast tissue to give you upper breast
fullness, then the mastopexy is combined with an augmentation.
An anatomic saline implant is placed under the chest muscle
(pectoralis) to add volume and shape to the breast.
Where are the scars?
The scar will run along around the areola and then follow the
contour of the breast to the fold beneath the breast. Imagine an
anchor and you will be able to visualize the scar. Since the
barely-visible scars are on the lower portion of the breast, you
will be able to wear any fashionable garment.
Will I lose sensation to the nipples or areolas?
Often, if not always, the sensation to both the nipples and
areolas are absent when touched lightly. This is because the
nerves have been stretched and have lost the ability to transmit
sensation. Prior to the surgery your sensation will be tested
with a wisp of cotton.
Will I be able to breast feed after the mastopexy?
The ducts to the nipple are often disrupted during this
contouring procedure and thus the milk line is no longer intact.
Some milk may come out after pregnancy but often not in
sufficient quantities.
What will happen if I get pregnant after the mastopexy?
During the nine months of pregnancy your breasts enlarge, swell
and change shape. Glands are enlarged and then diminish after
delivery (you do not breast feed). So the skin will be stretched
and altered again as will the shape and contour of the breast
and nipples.
When is the optimal time for my cosmetic surgery?
Being in the best shape, mentally, physically and skin wise.
Being close to your optimal weight is always best.
Where is the surgery performed?
Bridgeport Hospital or a Private Surgical Facility
Will I stay overnight?
After your cosmetic surgery you may either stay overnight in the
hospital or go home. If you stay overnight nurses will monitor
your progress and you will go home the following morning after I
visit you.

It is best to relax for the first 10 days. Bruising is variable

best friends after 10 days is good, but I would wait at least 2

good idea to exercise or increase your heart rate for 3 weeks
from the time of your cosmetic surgery and no vigorous lifting
or exercise for 6 weeks from surgery. This will help to diminish
your swelling and improve the rate at which you heal.
When can I buy new and exciting clothing that finally fit?
The breast shape continues to improve over the first six weeks.
Waiting a few weeks before purchasing the Victoria Secret line
is probably a good idea.
What can I do to expedite my healing?
We will give you a set of guidelines that tells you what
medicines to stay away from and which vitamins to take. Not

Forehead
or Brow Elevation (BELL)

Eyebrows:
Shape them, pluck them, tease them or tint them--the
eyebrows often need more than a camouflage job.
Low lying brows, especially the outer 1/3- 2/3,
often require a surgical fix. A unique brow lifting
procedure called the BELL Technique (Brow Elevation
Lid Lift) is performed with eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty).
The outer brows are repositioned through the eyelids
and sides of the scalp. The combined brow & lid lift
creates a lovely separation between the eyelid and
eyebrow. A refreshed, awake appearance is the end
result. Delay the signs of aging around your eyes by
lifting, tightening and smoothing your eyebrows and
eyelids all in one operation.
Advantages:
The eyebrow repositioning is performed at the same
time as the eyelid reshaping. The outer brow is
elevated, creating a lovely separation between the
thicker brow skin and thin delicate eyelid tissue.
Not only are the brows lifted, but the muscles
causing those deep lines and furrows in the forehead
are softened, eliminating many of the lines and
wrinkles.
Scars are kept to a minimum without the need to
remove excessive hair or to scar the top of the
scalp. Eyelid and brow scars are well hidden, which
is especially beneficial for men or women with
receding or thin hairlines.
With this unique procedure the upper face is
revitalized. Eyebrows and lids look natural and
refreshed. It is safe and associated with minimal
discomfort.
The end results restore a natural and healthy
appearance.
When is the optimal time for my cosmetic surgery?
Being in the best shape, mentally, physically and
skin wise is desirable. As the rest of our body
ages, so does the skin. The elasticity and thickness
diminish over time, therefore, having a procedure
when there is something relatively small to correct
is better than waiting for everything to fall. An
earlier lift lasts longer and gives you added years
to look and feel your best.
Why have a Browlift & Blepharoplasty?
Often the outer eyebrows droop causing a stern or
harsh appearance. The brows fall below the bone
causing a hooding of the over the outer eyelids. You
will only notice the hooding if you allow your
eyebrows to relax. It is common to keep the forehead
wrinkled and thus elevate the outer brow skin. So
you may not be aware of your eyebrows low lying
position.
When the brows are low they must be gently
repositioned immediately prior to correcting the
extra lid skin and fat. Otherwise the appearance
will not be natural and the lid scar will extend
onto the thicker temple skin. Only addressing both
the brow position and the lids can you be afforded
an optimal look. In order to give a natural
appearance after this cosmetic surgery, the lids and
brows must all be balanced.
Are there any other treatments that will improve
my appearance and results?
Definitely! Good skin care and the proper skin care
products will get your skin in the best shape before
cosmetic surgery and maintain it afterwards. We have
superb skin care aestheticians who will evaluate
your skin and recommend the proper care for you.
Where is the cosmetic surgery performed?
A private Surgical Center in Bridgeport or
Bridgeport Hospital
What will I need before my cosmetic
surgery?
You may be asked to obtain a medical evaluation by
your family physician, and/or an eye exam by either
your optometrist or ophthalmologist to ensure that
you are in the best possible shape.
Type of Anesthesia:
You are gently put to sleep using general anesthesia
so that you will be comfortable throughout the
operation. Once asleep, I will place local
anesthetic under the skin so that you will feel no
discomfort. This will also minimize the amount of
medicine you receive during the operation. By
putting you to sleep your heart rate, blood pressure
and levels of oxygen will be optimized. Rest assured
that being asleep for hours is generally very safe,
and the 5-5 ½ hours you sleep will be just fine.
Will smoking effect my healing?
Yes- Each cigarette’s effects lasts 12 hours on the
blood vessels of the body. Smoking causes the skin
to heal poorly and the complications associated with
smoking are tremendous. Even second hand smoke
during the weeks before after and after cosmetic
surgery will adversely affect your results. Stopping
is a must before and after any operation.
How long will the cosmetic surgery take?
I take my time and like to be meticulous. This means
not rushing through your surgery in order to work on
another patient. In addition, there are many things
that must be done before the operation can even
start, including washing and preparing the area,
making sure that your body is well cushioned, and
placing your legs into special boots in order to
compress them during the surgery. Likewise, at the
end of surgery I need to clean your face and apply a
special dressing. I will also wait around in
recovery after the surgery to be certain that all is
going well before I leave. The surgery itself lasts
between 5- 5 ½ hours.
What can I expect?
The folds of skin and creases in of the upper and
lower lids will be smoothed out. Bulging pockets of
fat will be softened and re-contoured to yield a
refreshed and alert appearance. Your eyes will look
much brighter than before. Likewise the low lying
eyebrows will be positioned to give a wide awake and
natural appearance. Usually, only the outer 1/2 -
2/3 of the brow is altered so that you will not have
a frightened or abnormal appearance. The forehead
may also be smoothed out so that you will no longer
have the need to raise the brows up off your eyelids
by wrinkling. The combined procedure will open up
your eyes and give you a lovely separation between
the brow and lids. Men, too, are benefited by the
combined lift; however, the brow position is
contoured and tailored specifically for males to
leave a masculine and rested look.
Where are the scars?
The scars are well hidden in the upper lid crease
and just below the lower eyelashes. Often an
invisible scar is placed inside the lower lid to
remove unwanted fat. The browlift scars are in the
hair bearing temple regions of the face. The scars
are a few inches long and have a curve to match the
contour of your head.
Do you shave my head?
There is not need to shave the area. A fine strip of
hair will be trimmed, but this is usually the area
to be removed. So you will lose very little hair.
Can I have a noticeable bald area?
Although the cutting is between the hair follicles
to allow growth over the scar, there are occasions
where the hair does not grow sufficiently. However,
the surrounding hair is usually sufficient to cover
the scar.
How long will I wear a bandage?
At the end of your cosmetic surgery I will place
paper strips along the upper lid and across the
outer lower lids. These will support the lids and
keep the tread clean. When you awaken in recovery
you will have a cotton pad over the lids for 30
minutes to keep the swelling to a minimum. I will
then remove the pads while you eat and drink. Your
head will be wrapped with a soft comfortable
dressing for 24 hours. You will be instructed to
remove it the next day.
Do I clean anything?
The paper strips on the lids are best left alone.
You will have clips in the scalp to support the skin
and afford a better scar. These clips are washed in
the shower with shampoo, cleaned with a q-tip and
peroxide and then covered with a very thin layer of
antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin). At times you may
need to place a gauze pad or sanitary napkin over
the clips if there is any oozing. This would be for
the first few days, if necessary.
When can I shower?
Usually the day after surgery you can shower;
however, it is best to not let the water hit your
face. Bathes, hot tubs, and steam rooms are not a
good idea for 3 weeks after your cosmetic surgery so
as to keep your swelling down. Washing your hair the
day after your cosmetic surgery is perfectly fine.
But you must either towel dry the area gently or use
a hair blower on the cool setting. No heat to the
area for 2 weeks.
When can I get my hair colored?
Coloring your hair a week prior to your cosmetic
surgery and 3-4 weeks afterwards is good. If there
are any small open areas in the scalp then you might
have to wait a bit longer after surgery to recolor.
Will my lids or forehead hurt?
Generally, there is minimal discomfort. You may note
snugness where the extra skin was, but there should
be very mild or no discomfort. A prescription to
help alleviate pain, should it arise, will be given
before surgery. Occasionally, there is mild
discomfort over the temple area for the first two
nights. This is easily relieved with the pain
medicines supplied.
When can I resume activities?
It is best to relax for the first 7-10 days.
Bruising is variable and usually located around the
lids. Seeing your best friends after 10 days is
good, but I would wait at least 2 weeks before
meeting new acquaintances. After 2 weeks you will
look presentable. After 3 weeks you will look much
better than before your cosmetic surgery, but you
still have another 3-4 weeks for 50% of the swelling
to subside. It is not a good idea to exercise or
increase your heart rate for 3 weeks from the time
of surgery. This will help to diminish your swelling
and improve the rate at which you heal.
What can I do to expedite my healing?
We will give you a set of guidelines that tells you
what medicines to stay away from and which vitamins
to take. Do not allow anyone to smoke in your
presence for weeks. Using ice often, rest,
maintaining a low salt diet and having a positive
attitude all go a long way to assisting your
recovery.
When will I see you again?
Depending upon the combination of surgeries, you
will re-visit the office within 4-8 days. There will
be multiple visits (which are included in your care)
to evaluate your progress and support your healing
needs.
Are there any additional fees to what was quoted?
Occasionally, the surgery takes a bit longer (as
there is never a rush), but you may owe an
additional fee for the operating room and
anesthesia. However, if future surgery or procedures
are necessary then there are additional fees for
anesthesia, the operating room and the surgeon.
Conclusion:
My staff and I will strive to take the best care of
you. We appreciate your trust and confidence in us
and do not take it lightly. My aim is to refresh,
smooth out, and brighten your appearance. A natural
look is always best; especially one that maintains
your personal facial identity. Looking as good on
the outside as you feel on the inside is what we
will accomplish together.

Corrective
Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Adults and children that present with protruding
ears that may also have lost many of the curves and
contours can benefit from an otoplasty. It is truly
a work of art to reshape the delicate contours of
the ear and prevent them from protruding from the
sides of the head. This surgery produces a positive
psychological boost.
Although an attempt is made to balance the ears,
there can only be relative symmetry obtained between
the ears. Producing a perfect match is impossible as
both ears are totally different. But then again, we
only see one ear at a time; so they need only to
resemble one another, which they will.
How long will it take for the ears to heal?
It takes at least 6 weeks for 50% of the swelling to
diminish, 80% within six months, and one year for
the final shape to be obtained. However, within 2-3
weeks your ears will look remarkably better. The
shape and contour will be readily seen and
appreciated after this short period of time.
What are some of the potential complications?
All surgery has some risk, but these are usually
minimal for ear reshaping. They include bleeding,
infection, poor healing, areas of numbness,
thickened scarring behind the ear, and visualization
of the cartilage edge that has been cut to reshape
the ear. One of the most problematic complications
is if the ear is pulled upon before properly healed.
If this occurs the shape will be altered.
How do you get the new ear shape?
Using a combination of techniques developed by Dr.
Rosenthal, the entire ear is sculpted and reshaped.
Portions of the protruding cartilage are removed and
the flat upper portion of the ear is tailored with
threads or stitches to produce a pleasing curve.
Stitches are also permanently placed in the ear
cartilage to reinforce and hold the cartilage in
place.
What happens if the threads or stitches break?
One or more of these stitches may break due to
excessive pulling or trauma. This would result in
return of some of the ear deformity and require
additional surgical intervention. But a good deal of
the new shape is determined by the permanent removal
of cartilage which will allow the ear to maintain a
good deal of the new position and shape.
When is the optimal time for my cosmetic surgery?
Being in the best shape, mentally, physically and
skin wise. Having a procedure when there is
something to correct is better than waiting forever.
Often this cosmetic surgery is performed on 6 year
olds and up. By the time the child is 5, the ear is
almost fully grown. The determining factor is the
ability to cooperate after the procedure. We want to
reshape the ears prior to any psychological problems
developing; so earlier is better than later.
However, adults that have had otoplasty surgery are
extremely happy and content with their new look.
Where is the cosmetic surgery performed?
Private Surgical Center or Bridgeport Hospital
What will I need before surgery?
You may be asked to obtain a medical evaluation by
your family physician to ensure that you are in the
best possible shape.
Type of Anesthesia:
You are gently put to sleep so that you will be
comfortable throughout the operation. Once asleep, I
will place a local anesthetic under the skin so that
you will feel no discomfort and the amount of
medicine you receive during the operation will be
minimized. By putting you to sleep your heart rate,
blood pressure and amount of oxygen will be
optimized.
How long will the cosmetic surgery take?
My objective is to give you my best effort. That
means not rushing through your surgery to do someone
else. I take my time and like to be meticulous.
There are many things that must be done before the
operation can even start, such as washing and
preparing the area, making sure that your body is
well cushioned, and placing your legs are in special
boots to compress them during the surgery. Likewise,
at the end of surgery I need to clean your ears and
apply a special dressing. But rest assured that
being asleep for a few hours is generally very safe,
so the 2 ½-3 hours you sleep will be just fine. I
will also wait around in recovery after the surgery
to be certain that all is going well before I leave.
What can I expect?
The ears have to be balanced so that they resemble
one another. They will never be identical. In fact,
one may protrude more than the other or be longer or
narrower. Some of these factors have to do with the
cartilage and skin available for reshaping. In
general, a very pleasing appearance is produced. The
protruding ears are closer to the sides of the head.
Both woman and men of all ages find that they are no
long inhibited by the appearance of the protruding
ears. Hair styles are altered to show off the ears
and hats that expose them are now worn proudly.
There is a smile that lasts forever after this
cosmetic surgery.
Will I bruise and swell after surgery?
With any surgery there is a degree of swelling and
bruising. Usually, the bruising and discoloration
starts to fade turning green, then yellow and is
gone between 2 and 3 weeks.
Where are the scars?
There is a scar on the bottom of the back of the ear
and occasionally on the front surface within one of
the folds...
How long will I wear a bandage?
It is crucial to hold the ears in position for the
first week. A bulky dressing is wrapped around your
head to cushion the ears and protect them. The
dressing will be changed over the first 7-10 days.
Thereafter, you will need to sleep with a headband
and pads over the ears for the next 3-4 weeks.
During the day you may need to wear a head band and
pads for 7-10 days.
When can I shower?
You can shower the next day as long as your head is
kept dry. The ears may get wet after 7-10 days.
Baths are not a good idea until 3 weeks after your
cosmetic surgery to keep your swelling down.
Will my ears hurt?
Generally, there is minimal discomfort. You will
note a small amount of soreness but this should be
very mild and relieved with either Tylenol or a pain
medication prescribed for you.
Will I take antibiotics?
Yes, preventing an infection of the other ears is
very important. You will use an antibiotic for 4-7
days after surgery and be given antibiotics during
the cosmetic surgery, too.
When I can resume activities?
It is best to relax for the first 7-10 days.
Bruising is variable and usually located in the

weeks for 50% of the swelling to subside. It is not
a good idea to exercise or increase your heart rate
for 3 weeks from the time of surgery. This will help
to diminish your swelling and improve the rate at
which you heal. Likewise, you must keep away from
contact sports to prevent the ears from being
injured or bent for the first 3-6 months.
What can I do to expedite my healing?
We will give you a set of guidelines that tells you
what medicines to stay away from and which vitamins
to take. Not allowing anyone to smoke in your
presence for week, using ice and cool compresses
often, resting, a low salt diet, and having a
positive attitude go a long way to assisting your
recovery.
Will smoking effect my healing?
Obviously this is for adults: Yes--Each cigarette
lasts 12 hours on the blood vessels of the body and
smoke is toxic. Smoking causes the skin to heal
poorly and the complications associated with smoking
are tremendous. Even second hand smoke during the
weeks before this cosmetic surgery and after will
adversely affect your results. Stopping is a must
before and after any operation
When will I see you again?
Depending upon the combination of surgeries, you
will re-visit the office within 6-8 days. There will
be multiple visits, 3-4 which are included in your
care, to evaluate your progress and support your
healing needs.

If the surgery takes a bit longer (as there is never
a rush) you may owe a bit more for the operating
room and anesthesia. However, if future cosmetic
surgery or procedures are necessary there are
additional fees for anesthesia, the operating room
and the surgeon.
Conclusion:
My staff and I will strive to take the best care of
you. We appreciate your trust and confidence in us
and do not take it lightly. My aim is to refine your
ears by blending them with your other features.

Can I have only my two lids smoothed out?
Usually, there is loosening of the skin and bulging
of extra lid fat in all four
eyelids. Only addressing two lids will not afford
you the optimal look. The
other lids, not worked upon, will look that much
worse. In order to give a
natural appearance after surgery, the lids must all
be balanced together.
Are there any other treatments that will improve my

diminish over time,
therefore, having a procedure when there is a relatively small
correction is better
than waiting for a larger undertaking. An earlier lift lasts

Will I look different?
Your basic bone structure determines who you are. However,
tightening and
supporting the underlying soft structures, as well as smoothing
out loose skin enables
you to look well while still maintaining your personal identity.
Can I have only my neck tightened?
Usually, there is loosening of the neck muscles and skin along
with laxity along the
jaw. In order to give a pleasant and natural appearance after
this cosmetic surgery, the neck,
jaw and cheek should be balanced.
Are there any other treatments that will improve my
appearance and results?
Definitely! Good skin care and the proper skin care products
will get your skin in the

Stopping is a must before and after any operation.
How long will the surgery take?
In order to be meticulous with your surgery, I will take

is going well
before I leave. The cosmetic surgery itself generally lasts,
however, between 5 and 6 hours.
What can I expect?
The folds of skin and creases in front of your ears will be
smoothed out. Sagging
skin and fat along your jaw-line will be repositioned to bring
back a clean, crisp
line. Neck skin and muscle will be tightened, and extra fat in
these areas will be
sculpted away where necessary.
Where are the scars?
The scar usually starts at your sideburn, then passes to the top
of the ear,
following the ear contour around the earlobe into the groove
behind the ear. At
the back of the ear, the scar will delve into the neck hairline.
There will also be a
line under your chin so I can tighten the neck muscles.
How long will I wear a bandage?
At the end of surgery I will wrap a soft cottony bandage around
your head. This
will be changed the next morning and replaced with an elastic
garment that
you will wear for 1 week, except when you shower.
When can I shower?
Usually the day after your first post-operative office visit.
Shower with a mild
shampoo and gentle facial cleanser. Bathes are not a good idea
for 3 weeks
after surgery so as to keep your swelling down.
Will my Face hurt?
Generally, there is minimal discomfort. You will note snugness
about the
face and neck from tightening the underlying tissues that have
been
loose for so many years.

Restylane,
Perlane, Juvaderm and Sculptra Consultation/FAQ's

Smooth, lift and rejuvenate lines
and creases of the Face-Mouth-Lips
Aging
Aging is a gradual process of volume loss and skin
alteration. As part of the normal aging process, we find
our muscles, fat and bones of the face losing fullness and
contour. The overlying skin begins to suffer a loss of
firmness and elasticity.
Fillers
Restylane, Perlane and Juvéderm are purified natural
products that act as plumpers. They are similar to the
normal (Hyaluronic Acid or HA) found within our healthy skin
which enhance volume and tone by grasping onto water and holding
it like a sponge. Since HA products are purified and are
synthesized, they carry a much lower risk of allergies or
rejection by your body.
With the aging of the skin there is a loss of the HA resulting
in sagging and volume depletion. Imagine a partially filled
balloon. Without the extra water in our skin and loss of
the deeper tissue fullness, our skin starts to show lines,
creases and deep folds.
How do the
HA products produce a contour improvement?
They work in two ways to fill and shape lips, lines and
creases.
The HA products come in various forms depending upon the number
of particles suspended in the solution. Perlane and
Juvaderm Ultra Plus are best for the deeper creases and contour
changes around the mouth, jaw and cheeks. These act a as
platform onto which the smoother and slightly thinner Restylane
or Juvaderm can then be added to complete the process.
Imagine the bottom layer as the bottom of a cake. It rises
up to form the base of the cake. The top HA layer is like
the icing used to finish off the shape and make the cake look
pretty.
How many
syringes of product will you need?
Typically, most patients require at least two syringes to
start the process, but this will depend upon how many areas are
to be softened and contoured. The more areas of concern require
additional volumes to fill. It is like waxing your floor.
Put a bit of wax in the middle of the floor and spread it out.
If the floor is small, you will be able to cover the entire
area. Larger floors will be inadequately covered or only
have a very thin veneer of wax. So too, the HA products
can only be spread so far. You may have a procedure and
after a few weeks require additional HA to complete the
contouring.
How long
does it last?
The manufactures note that the HA products may last 6-9
months. However, certain areas of the face, such as the
lips will have faster volume depletion due to their movement.
Each person is an individual, so predicting precise longevity is
difficult.
Does it
hurt?
Most physicians will only place a cream or ointment on the
top the skin and then inject the HA products. As you can
imagine, this would be less than comfortable.
The process of numbing your mouth requires up to 1 hour by Dr.
Rosenthal. First, an ointment is put on to decrease the
sensitivity and potential later bruising. Secondly, a gel
is placed on your gums and inner lips to numb these areas before
a numbing liquid is injected, similar to a dentist.
Thirdly, more numbing liquid is placed deep under the skin to
allow you the most comfort during the HA procedure.
Generally, the areas to be injected with the HA products are
fairly numb to afford you the most comfort during the sculpting
procedure.
Will I be
bruised and swollen?
Since the HA products draw fluid into the skin, one can
expect swelling for a few days. They also affect clotting
in the areas of injection causing some bruising. The
degree and extent of swelling varies and may last between 3-7
days on average. Makeup can be used the day after the
procedure to camouflage these areas.
Are there
potential risks?
With any procedure there are potential risks of
complications. These are generally few and infrequent.
Bruising that lasts a bit longer (longer than 7-10 days) than
expected with swelling can occur. The injections to sculpt
your face require multiple entry points with a very fine needle
(after the area is numb). These pin points may stay around
for more than 1-2 weeks, and there is always the rare occurrence
where the mark(s) does not disappear.
The face is not even or symmetrical, and thus only relative
symmetry can be obtained. No face is symmetrical before or after
the HA products. Since the products fill the skin and hold
fluid, there is a chance of having extra fullness or small
thickenings in or under the skin. Usually they disappear
with time and massage, but there is the rare chance of their
staying. Allergic reaction or the HA products causing
temporary or permanent discoloration to the skin is another rare
complication.
What to
expect:
The HA products enable Dr. Rosenthal the opportunity to
artistically sculpt your face to a softer, fuller and more
youthful appearance. By taking the time to properly numb your
face, mouth and lips, Dr. Rosenthal can produce a natural
fullness. This transformation comes about by layering the
products in such a way to lift, contour and augment your own
tissues.
Lips
The pink lining of the lips began to sag and lose
taughtness. This is due to loss of muscle volume of the
lips. Restylane or Juvaderm can be used to build up and
enhance your lip line and lip fullness.
Corners of
the mouth
These droop like other areas of face. The HA products
can subtlety elevate these folds.
Lip lines
Vertical and horizontal lines in the upper and lower lips
can be softened and contoured.
Creases
next to the mouth
Folds extending from the nose to the corners of the mouth
and beyond are attributable do to the laxity of the cheek
tissues. The HA products act as a scaffolding to re-support and
contour these folds. The deep folds are pleasingly
softened with great care to not overfill them which would result
in unsightly bulge.
Jaw line
When the jaw line sags a bit and is no long crisp and
smooth, HA products can build up some of the depressions
adjacent to the chin.
Cheek-Forehead-Temples
Hollows in this area can be softened with HA products;
however, deep cavities will require another product called
Sculptra.
Sculptra
Unlike other fillers, actually causes
your own skin to build up thickness. The process requires
3-5 treatments which are spaced at 4-8 week intervals.
This product may last up to 3 years. When contouring with
Sculptra it can be used in the temple, cheeks, jaw and junction
of the nose and cheek. Sculptra is the best product for
large area contouring.
When do I
see Dr. Rosenthal again?
We have a complimentary follow-up evaluation 2-4 weeks after
the first treatment session. This is to judge the contour
improvement and to see if additional filling with the HA
products is necessary to achieve the desired results.
Conclusion
HA products have revolutionized how Dr. Rosenthal can build
up, create and rejuvenate your face in a caring and gentle
manner. A consultation with Dr. Rosenthal prior to the
procedure allows for a proper evaluation and treatment plan.
The HA products do not replace good skin care, treatments and
products supplies by our professional staff, nor are they a
solution for those who are in need of surgically lifting and
re-supporting your face and eyelids.
We hope you will find the HA products as satisfying as those
patients who have already benefited from Dr. Rosenthal’s
artistic handing of these fillers.

Nasal
Contouring Consultation/FAQ's

When is the optimal time for my cosmetic surgery?
Being in the best shape, mentally, physically and
skin wise is desirable.
Having a procedure when there is something to
correct is better than
waiting. Often, teenagers do well with having their
noses reshaped
before it becomes a psychological problem. However,
adults of all ages
will also benefit from nasal reshaping.
Are there any other treatments that will improve my
appearance and results?
Definitely! Good skin care and the proper skin care products
will get your
skin in the best shape before cosmetic surgery and maintain it
afterwards. We have
superb skin care aestheticians who will evaluate your skin and
recommend the proper care for you.
Where is the cosmetic surgery performed?
Health South Surgical Center in Bridgeport or Bridgeport
Hospital
What will I need before my cosmetic surgery?
You may be asked to obtain a medical evaluation by
your family
physician to ensure that you are in the best
possible shape. This may
include an EKG and blood work.
Type of Anesthesia:
You are gently put to sleep using general anesthesia so that you
will be
comfortable throughout the operation. Once asleep, I will place
local
anesthetic under the skin so that you will feel no discomfort.
This will
minimize the amount of medicine you receive during the
operation. By
putting you to sleep your heart rate, blood pressure and levels
of oxygen
will be optimized.
Will smoking effect my healing?
Yes- Each cigarette’s effects lasts 12 hours on the
blood vessels of the
body. Smoking causes the skin to heal poorly and the
complications
associated with smoking are tremendous. Even second
hand smoke
during the weeks before after and after this
cosmetic surgery will adversely affect your
results. Stopping is a must before and after any
operation.
How long will the surgery take?
I take my time and like to be meticulous. This means not rushing
through
your surgery in order to work on another patient. In addition,
there are
many things that must be done before the operation can even
start,
including washing and preparing the area, making sure that your
body is
well cushioned and placing your legs in special boots to
compress them
during the surgery. Likewise, at the end of surgery I need to
clean your
face and apply a special dressing. The surgery itself, however,
generally
lasts between 2 ½ to 3 hours. I will also wait in recovery after
the surgery to
be certain that all is going well before I leave.
What can I expect?
The nose has to be balanced to match the features of your face.
Usually,
the top of the nose is lowered, the width is brought in, and the
tip is
sculpted to give a better shape. The object is not to change
your identity,
but to make your nose blend with your other features.
Will I bruise and swell after cosmetic surgery?
With any surgery there is a degree of swelling and bruising. The
areas next
to the nose will bruise, and although not everyone gets lower
lid bruising,
do not be surprised if it happens. Usually, the discoloration
fades to green
and then yellow, and is gone between 1 and 2 weeks.
Where are the scars?
There is a scar on the bottom of the nose. Occasionally, I need
to bring in
the nostril which places a scar in the grooves of where the nose
meets the cheeks.
How long will I wear a bandage?
I will put a splint on top of the nose which will be
in place for 6-8 days.
There will be a small pad under your nose for the
first 2-3 days to catch
any drippings. You will change this pad as necessary
over this time period.
Sometimes the splint loosens after a few days. Place
a piece of paper
tape, skin tape, over the splint. Even if it falls
off, just replace it with tape.
When can I shower?
Usually the day after this cosmetic surgery you can
shower; however, it is best to not let
the water hit you face or the splint will loosen.
Baths are not a good idea
for 3 weeks after surgery so as to keep your
swelling down. In 6-8 days,
when the splint is removed, you can wash your entire
face.
Will my nose hurt?
Generally, there is minimal discomfort. You will note
stuffiness, but there
should be very mild to no discomfort. A prescription for
medicine to
alleviate any discomfort will be given prior to surgery.
When I can resume activities?
It is best to relax for the first 7-10 days. Bruising is
variable and usually
located in the around the lids. Seeing your best friends after
10 days is
good, but I would wait at least 2 weeks before meeting new
acquaintances. After 2 weeks you will look presentable. After 3
weeks
much better than before surgery but you still have another 3-4
weeks for
50% of the swelling to subside. It is not a good idea to
exercise or increase
your heart rate for 3 weeks from the time of surgery. This will
help to
diminish your swelling and improve the rate at which you heal.
What can I do to expedite my healing?
We will give you a set of guidelines that tells you what
medicines to stay
away from and which vitamins to take. Do not allow anyone to
smoke in
your presence for weeks. Using ice often, rest, maintaining a
low salt diet
and having a positive attitude all go a long way to assisting
your recovery.
When will I see you again?
Depending upon the combination of surgeries, you
will re-visit the office
within 6-8 days. There will be multiple visits
(which are included in your
care) in order to evaluate your progress and support
your healing needs.
Are there any additional fees to what was quoted?
If this cosmetic surgery takes a bit longer (as
there is never a rush), you may owe a
bit more for the operating room and anesthesia.
However, if future
surgery or procedures are necessary, there will be
additional fees for
anesthesia, the operating room and the surgeon.
Conclusion:
My staff and I will strive to take the best care of you. We
appreciate your
trust and confidence in us and do not take it lightly. My aim is
to refine
your nose by blending it with your other features. A natural
look is always
best; especially one that maintains your personal facial
identity. Looking
as good on the outside as you feel on the inside is what we will
accomplish together.
If you have additional questions we are available to answer
them.
