FAQs About IPL

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Also known as a “photofacial” treatment it delivers broadband light through the skin for Skin rejuvenation. IPL helps restore a youthful looking skin intended for photo aged or sun damaged skin.

What can I expect from the IPL?

Pigment is stimulated to rise to the surface; delicate elastic fibers that function as a supportive network are damaged. Lines, wrinkles and age spots appear uneven pigment and broken vessels abound – costing you big bucks to find the perfect cover up makeup. After each Intense Pulsed Light treatment you will see the brown and red pigmented areas of your face gradually lighten and start to disappear.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?

Skin turning pink and a little sore immediately after the procedure. Sensation of a mild sunburn (redness, peeling, swelling) that may last a few days after treatment. Rarely, skin pigment may absorb too much light energy and blistering can occur.

How many treatments will I require?

Each face, neck and hand is unique. The IPL is spaced 3-4 weeks apart to allow the optimum results. Generally, the number of treatments varies with the amount of sun damage and pigment to treat. This may take 3-5 sessions.

Does it hurt?

After applying a cool gel to the area to be treated a bright light (IPL) is passed over the skin. Moist pads and goggles will protect your eyes; however, you may see some light and feel a warm sensation. Occasionally, you may feel a small pinch or snapping like sensation. There is minimal to no discomfort after or during the treatments.

Is there any care after my IPL treatment?

The best results are when you apply our creams to soothe and speed up the bodies healing mechanism.

What else can I do for my skin? Skin Care:
Start by protecting your skin with medical grade skin care products that really work. Choose a reflective block during the peak of the day and chemical absorbent block at other times. Use products with glycolic acid ingredients to remove the outer uneven layer of the skin where pigments dwell, soothing moisture creams to hydrate the dry skin and by all means use facial cleansers which will not dry your skin.
Facial fillers: See “Rosenthal Liquid Facelift” – Fillers have revolutionized facial contouring. Juvéderm, Expression and Radiesse are synthesized products that plump up, support and reshape the face, lasting from several months to over a year. The results can be so remarkable.
While Juvéderm and Expression smoothes out lip lines and restores lost volume around the mouth, Radiesse restores or improves the cheek bones and arch to lift, smooth and contour hollow areas. The combination of Radiesse and Juvéderm and Expression are a perfect match for facial rejuvenation and enhancement.
Botox: Smooth out those hard to manage forehead wrinkles. Give a lift to your face. Dr. Rosenthal, with offices in Fairfield and Greenwich, Connecticut, balances your forehead muscles so you appear rested, calm and pretty.

How Do IPL Photo Facial Rejuvenation Treatments Work?

Using the advanced IPL system, Dr. Rosenthal gently delivers precise amounts of light energy through your skin’s surface.  Treatments are spaced at three to four week intervals.  The energy is delivered at specific settings for each treatment to maximize your results.

The light energy stimulates the production of collagen.  As the new collagen forms, it softens the appearance of aging skin.  Fine lines and wrinkles are decreased.  The redness associated with rosacea can be dramatically reduced.

Depending on the area treated, there will be a series of up to 6 treatments.  Treatments usually take from 15 to 30 minutes and are administered in the doctor’s office.

What Areas Does Dr. Rosenthal Treat With IPL?

The areas that Dr. Rosenthal treats with IPL are the entire face, neck, chest or décolleté, and the back of the hands.

What About Hair Removal?

IPL can be effective in removing unwanted hair.  IPL stops the hair follicle from producing more hair.  Once the hair falls out, in most cases the follicle will not produce any further hair from growing.  The hair removal process may take up to 6 treatments.

What Results Can I Expect?

After only one treatment, your skin will have a more even tone with a smoother look and feel.  Sunspots and hyper pigmentation will fade.  Pore size will shrink.  Fine lines and wrinkles will gradually decrease in size. These improvements will steadily increase with each treatment.  Patients with Rosacea will see a progressive decrease in redness with every treatment.

What Will Recovery Be Like?

Post-operative discomfort is almost nonexistent.  After treatment with most light systems, the treated skin may appear a little flushed, capillaries and hyper pigmentation may seem to be more visible and then will begin to fade.  The flushed look soon fades away and the capillaries and brown and red spots appear to diminish or vanish leaving the skin looking younger.  It’s that simple!
